Characterisation
Lennie

Setting and atmosphere
Vivid descriptions of the countryside are Simple and idealistic.
Social and historical context
The two tiered society that they lived in is obvious.
1940’s USA – a racially difficult place to be.
Reference to animals
Lennie = the dog
There are so many ways that Steinbeck refers to Lennie as a dog.
Also, the dog dies in the same way as Lennie dies.
Reference to things to come
Lots of talk about shooting a dog. This can be seen as a symbol for Lennie.
‘I wisht somebody’d shoot me if I got old an’ a cripple’ page 46
‘If you want me to I will put the old devil out of his misery. Can’t eat, can’t see….’
These happenings are all a sign of things to come.
